Old Name, New Ship: Why Legend of the Seas Feels Like Coming Home

Some names carry history. Some names evoke nostalgia. And some—like Legend of the Seas—manage to do both. For us at Vitamin Sea, this one is personal.

Royal Caribbean has just announced the name of its third Icon-class ship: Legend of the Seas. A bold choice, considering the legacy it revives. The original Legend of the Seas was part of the Vision class, launching in 1995 and carrying a generation of cruisers around the world. It’s a ship that means a lot to us, not least because Scott used to work on board. Yes, before Vitamin Sea, before Instagram, before any of this—he was there, sweating it out behind the scenes, making sure guests had the time of their lives. And now, nearly three decades later, the name returns.

The new Legend of the Seas will follow in the wake of Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, bringing even more innovation, thrill, and next-level cruising to the high seas. If the first two Icon-class ships are anything to go by, we can expect sprawling waterparks, mind-blowing entertainment, and some of the most impressive onboard experiences ever seen. Royal Caribbean isn’t just making waves—they’re practically re-engineering the ocean.

But what can we expect from this next Icon-class ship? While details remain under wraps, we can make some educated guesses based on her predecessors. The new Legend of the Seas will likely feature the massive AquaDome, thrilling Category 6 water slides, and luxurious, family-friendly accommodations. The Ultimate Family Townhouse, a three-level suite introduced on Icon of the Seas, may return as well, offering an unparalleled at-sea experience.

Dining will undoubtedly be another showstopper. Royal Caribbean has upped its game in recent years, moving far beyond the standard buffet and main dining room experience. Icon of the Seas introduced over 20 different dining venues, including immersive and experiential eateries. Will the new Legend take this even further? Given Royal Caribbean’s tendency to outdo itself, we wouldn’t be surprised if they unveiled even more innovative concepts, blending global cuisine with theatrical flair.

Entertainment is another area where Legend of the Seas is sure to shine. If the pattern holds, we’ll likely see high-tech, Broadway-caliber productions, cutting-edge ice skating shows, and dazzling aerial performances. The AquaTheater, a staple of Oasis-class ships, could return in some form, along with new immersive experiences that push the boundaries of at-sea entertainment.

Sustainability will also play a major role. With cruise lines increasingly prioritizing environmental initiatives, Legend of the Seas is expected to feature cutting-edge eco-friendly technology. LNG-powered engines, advanced wastewater treatment, and energy-efficient designs will likely be part of its DNA, ensuring that this new Legend not only sets records for entertainment but also for sustainability.

As for the original Legend of the Seas, she’s still sailing—just under a different name. Now known as Marella Discovery 2, she continues to offer incredible holidays, albeit with a slightly different vibe. It’s a reminder that while cruise ships evolve, their legacies endure. And with the arrival of a new Legend, it feels like the story has come full circle.

For those of us with a history in the industry, this revival is more than just a name—it’s a bridge between past and future. The original Legend of the Seas was known for her sleek profile, expansive windows, and sense of adventure. Her modern namesake will undoubtedly carry that same spirit, albeit on a much grander scale.

So, here’s to the next chapter. A new Legend of the Seas is on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see how she shapes the future of cruising. Whether you’re a seasoned Royal Caribbean fan or new to the brand, this is one ship that’s bound to make waves.
