Must do's
Things we did and we think you should too...
Sugar Beaches
Spend the day in Mount Lavinia, exploring the Mt. Lavinia beach and Mt. Lavinia Hotel; the first in Sri Lanka. Take in the views with a cold beer or cocktail, or take a dip in the pool. Day passes to their private beach are available. We had lunch at Sugar Beach ,nestled between the railway line and the beach. Make sure you try a Lion beer with the Sri Lankan Crab Kottu!
Ride the Trains
We rode the train from Fort Station to Mount Lavinia and what an experience it was! We hung out the wide open doors, took in the sea air and tried to view Colombo from a local perspective. The trains are perfectly safe and a great way to see the Island. The trip cost less than 50p ($0.50/€0.50). The stations accept cash only.
Tour in a Tuk Tuk
You have to give this a go! We toured the city with a great local guide in a tuk tuk. We felt like Indiana Jones in incense filled temples, tried street food, saw elephants and learnt from a local. This tour is a must do! Book through Capital Tours They can also be found on Viator/Trip Advisor.
Top Tips
Tips to help you have a great time on shore.
Uber?
Yes- For taxi's and Tuk Tuks.
Currency?
Sri Lankan Rupee is the local currency.- ATMs are not available in port. but there are many banks and ATMs in the City, including the train station. You can pay by card and Apple Pay works in some more commercial location
Dock Side?
There is little to nothing available in the port; coach transfers will take you to a choice of two port entrances; one located close to the modern shopping centre and the other close the centre of the city. Tuk Tuks will be waiting at each entrance, but we would recommend Uber to fix the price.
