As we hoist our metaphorical sails and navigate the vast expanse of the world's oceans, our compass points us towards a treasure trove of destinations waiting to be discovered. From the bustling harbours of Thailand to the exotic shores of Malaysia and the dazzling cityscape of Singapore, our journey continues to the plateaued rice fields of Vietnam, the cherry blossom-lined streets of Japan, the towering limestone islands of Halong bay and the pearl of the Orient; Hong Kong, So batten down the hatches, splice the mainbrace, and prepare for another exhilarating voyage filled with adventure, discovery, and perhaps a dash of whit along the way. Let's once again cast off and embark on this maritime odyssey together!
So, you left us last as we jumped onboard a jeep and rode out into the plains of Yala national park; famed for its Sri Lankan leopards. Sadly, we didn’t meet one, but we got acquainted with many an elephant and a monkey or two! We set sail from Hambantota across the Andaman Sea, with a heavy heart; we really did fall in love with Sri Lanka and its people – don’t worry, we will return!
Thailand
The ship is now pointing firmly towards Phuket, two days at sea landed us in the cove of Phuket and its golden beaches. Today is a day both Scott and I have been looking forward to since we booked this adventure many months ago, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. It's disheartening to see these magnificent creatures endure mistreatment, forced to entertain tourists, or perform manual labour against their wishes. However, Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a beacon of hope in this respect. Nestled in the vibrant jungles of Phuket, Thailand, this sanctuary stands as a haven for retired and rescued elephants. Its noble mission is to offer these gentle giants a haven, free from exploitation and hardship. The elephants that call ‘PES’ home have free will and roam the site as they please, bathe when they please and only collect treats from visitors if they chose to. The sanctuary has an amazing walkway where you can watch the elephants, but you also get taken up close and personal by the guides. Be careful when you book your next ‘Sanctuary’ if they’re made to take a mud bath with you, are they any better off?
Malaysia
All aboard, next stop is Kuala Lumpa, we chose to go it alone and jump onboard one of the local trains for an authentic journey into the city from the nearest port; Port Klang. Towering skyscrapers vie for the skyline, while bustling streets below teem with life and colour. We ventured to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, standing as beacons of modernity and innovation, offering breath taking views from their dizzying heights. We cooled off nearby in the W hotel’s pool area. It’s a hidden gem, offering cool beers, coupled with a cool pool, with the perfect backdrop of the twin towers behind you, reflecting in the water. Our second stop was the Batu Caves and a climb of 272 steps. Once you’ve caught your breath you’re welcomed into main entrance of the cave complex, which is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India. The vast caves swallow you up, with brightly painted statues and temples inside, with vines hanging from the cavernous openings, casting hazy sunlight on the floor, all mixed together with the sent and smoke of incense in the air.
Singapore
Next port of call is our culminating destination along the ‘Spice Route’ expedition, the tropical city-state of Singapore. I first encountered this vibrant city many years ago, whilst working as an onboard manager for a British airline. Singapore, a fusion of Asian and Western influences, captivates with its rich tapestry of cultures where every individual is respected, and every tradition celebrated. From savouring delectable dishes in the bustling Hawker Markets to wandering amidst the tropical wonders of Gardens by the Bay, from taking a daring plunge into the incredible infinity pool atop Marina Bay Sands to basking on the sun-kissed shores of Sentosa, or even embarking on thrilling adventures at Universal Studios—Singapore is a city tailor-made for the intrepid soul, offering an abundance of experiences that cater to every taste and inclination. Make sure you visit Raffles for afternoon tea, but book early, the spots get snapped up months in advance! Singapore is complete with a purpose-built cruise terminal, making it a great place to start or end a voyage.
Japan
Staying firmly in Asia lets discover what ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’, Japan, has to offer. Another one of my favourite destinations anywhere in the globe Japan is home to some of the more gracious people I’ve ever met. The country perfectly balances Tradition and innovation. Whilst visiting Tokyo via the city of Yokohama, I recommend you visit Kamakura, home to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and the famous Great Buddha statue. Or you can take in the iconic Shibuya crossing; Everyday thousands of people cross at this junction, creating a hypnotic display of movement and energy. The best spot to watch the action take place is from Starbucks whilst sipping on Hojicha Tea Latte! You can also visit the Japanese version of the happiest place on earth – Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, in my opinion the two best Disney parks in the world! Other novelties can be found around the Yokohama area if you don’t want to travel too far; such as the cup noodle museum, where you can take your own personalised cup home, or the plastic food museum… Intrigued? Have a google!
One of the most popular sights to see whilst in Japan are the cherry blossom trees, which can be found in locations across the Islands. The season lasts between late March to early May. My favourite spot to see the blossom is in Tokyo itself, its woven into the city tapestry, lining streets, placed like candy floss around the imperial palaces, turning parks into a pink hues and waterways pinky white as petals drop.
My second choice to witness the bloom is Japan’s former capital, where you can be swept away by the magic of the imperial past. Its cobblestone streets, lined with traditional machiya houses and hidden temples, weave a tapestry of mystery. Within this ancient city, the graceful presence of geishas glides like shadows, their porcelain faces veiled in secrecy, preserving the elusive allure of tradition. Steeped in rituals dating back generations, Kyoto's teahouses resonate with the echo of whispered conversations, where tales of love and intrigue intertwine with the delicate art of the tea ceremony. As lanterns cast a soft glow upon the historic Gion district, Kyoto remains a captivating enigma, preserving the essence of Japan's rich cultural heritage amidst the passage of time.
Ships dock in Osaka Kyoto, public transport or tours can be booked to visit. If you’re lucky enough to overnight make sure you venture into Osaka too; a lively metropolis, with its blend of modernity, tasty street food, and vibrant entertainment, which embodies Japan's urban charm. Kyoto is also around a 2 hour zip by a Shinkansen/Bullet train from Tokyo – something you must try whilst in Japan!
Hong Kong
Our fourth bustling capital city on the list is ‘the pearl of the orient’, Hong Kong. Nestled on the south-eastern coast of China, Hong Kong pulsates with an electrifying energy that fascinates all who step foot on its shores. Skyscrapers pierce the skyline, creating a hustling urban jungle where Chinese tradition and modernity intertwine seamlessly. From bustling street markets overflowing with tempting aromas to serene temples nestled amidst towering buildings, Hong Kong offers a sensory adventure. The city’s unique blend of East and West, coupled with its rich cultural tapestry, ensures an unforgettable experience for every traveller. Will you be daring enough to try a scorpion on a stick? Our highlights include jumping onboard a traditional street tram, exploring the cities elevated walkways in Nam Long Sham, the famous ‘Big Buddha’ on Lantau Island or the breath taking city scape from ‘The Peak’. Don’t forget to try the dim sum and local street food or take a moment to relax on the beach at Repulse Bay.
Just like Tokyo, we also popped into to say hi to Mickey Mouse at the second of three Asian Disneyland’s; if you want thrills without the mouse try Ocean Park instead!

Vietnam
As we turn the ship toward Oceania, Vietnam is our last port of call in the Asian continent. Begin your journey amidst the mystical allure of Halong Bay, where towering limestone karsts pierce through emerald waters, creating a scene straight out of a fantasy novel. As you cruise through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll be mesmerised, with hidden caves and secluded beaches beckoning you to explore further.
Feel your adrenaline surge as you traverse the winding roads of Hai Van Pass, offering panoramic views of the indigo coastline below. Dive into the rich cultural tapestry of Danang, where historic landmarks like the Marble Mountains and the ancient town of Hoi An transport you back in time. Our vitaminise expedition culminates in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City. Lose yourself in the chaotic charm of the city's bustling streets, where scooters weave through crowds of people and vibrant markets offer a feast for the senses.
As the sun sets on our Asian odyssey, we hope you’re filled with the spirit of adventure and the allure of the unknown…
Many cruise lines now choose to call Asia home for the season, with many more stops such as the exotic shores of Bali, the techno savvy cities of South Korea or the diverse island ports of Taiwan. We would personally suggest Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line or Princess Cruises; however other lines such as Cunard and Royal Caribbean also offer itineraries. If you’re looking for smaller ships, we would suggest Azamara and Oceania cruises.
Join us next time for the final part three where we explore, Australia, New Zealand, New England and Opportunities closer to home; the British Isles...
